AI Usage Policy
Since November 2022 when ChatGPT was initially released, we have been witnessing a technological revolution which asks us to rethink a lot of things: how we work, how we “fuse” with technology, what rules and regulations we should apply to AI, and most importantly, how much we let this new technology reshape our life.
AI impacts many aspects of our lives, and it is becoming increasingly intrusive. It offers many advantages as well, no doubt. But there are ethical issues, such as the protection of intellectual property, the potential for misuse, and privacy and surveillance. AI servers also leave very large carbon footprints and lead to resource depletion.
At this point, I want to articulate my use of AI systems and apps and explain the principles that guide me, in the spirit of transparency.
Of note also, regardless of the tools used in the translation process, ultimately the final responsibility for accuracy, tone, and compliance always rests with me.
Principle 1
I do not use AI systems or apps to translate
There are some tools that I use to increase the quality of my work, such as computer-assisted translation tools (quality control apps, translation and terminology memory). I occasionally use AI for research (for determining accurate terminology or clarifying medical concepts), and side tasks, such as terminology extraction, but I don’t currently use and will not use AI to translate, unless it is specifically requested by the client.
As we all know 1) AI is prone to errors and in general produces subpar results that take much time to correct and is therefore not an efficient use of my time; 2) the privacy and security issues that are associated with AI tools simply make it too much of a risk to input client information.
Principle 2
I am absolutely committed to protecting client confidentiality at all cost
All client documents are processed and stored on my computer and external backup drives, and not on the cloud. I do not and will not submit any client documents, in totality or in part, to any AI system for any purpose, except under the client’s authorization. This is in addition to my obligation to adhere to Quebec’s Law 25 regarding the protection of personal information.
Principle 3
I am committed to adhering to digital sobriety
I aim to use AI tools as wisely and efficiently as possible, with as little impact as possible on the environment. I am committed to keeping on learning about those tools to fine-tune my use of them, always with respecting the environment in mind.
I am committed to transparency; therefore, if you have any questions or concerns about this policy or the use of AI in the performance of my job, or if you would like to discuss my use and/or storage of your data, please feel free to contact me at denise@deniseberube.ca
